Zero-waste January Challenge

It is already the middle of January now, have you started any New Year challenges yet? It is never too late to start a challenge, perhaps a Zero-waste Challenge? Let us start with inside the home and work our way outwards to the community.

Zero-waste Home Challenge

  • Wardrobe Party: – Go through the collection of clothes and sort out items that you have not worn for at least a year. Pack them up and have a swap meet with your friends! Do not open the bags and just swap them. Surprises are more entertaining!
  • Wardrobe Donations: – After going through the items that you definitely are not going to wear again, you can drop off the donations to your nearest donation centre.
  • Personal Hygiene: – Instead of plastic toothbrushes and shavers, did you know that there are zero-waste alternatives? Look for bamboo toothbrushes and metal razors for shavers.
  • House Cleaning Solution: – There are so many dangerous chemicals in so many of the common cleaning agents. Did you know that you can make a simple, but effective cleaning agent with vinegar and some essential oils too?
  • Cleaning Towels: – Try to reduce the usage of paper towels. After going through your closet, there usually is a stack of very old towels or shirts lying around. Why not cut these up and turn them into cleaning or drying towels?
  • Fridge Fears: – Remember the common habit of constantly replacing foods and items that are finished? Why not wait till the refrigerator is completely empty before replenishing supplies? Take less trips to the supermarket can help reduce car emissions.
  • Snail Mail: – There is nothing wrong with writing and receiving letters as memories. But, junk mails is exactly that, junk! So reduce this junk mail by putting up a sign to let them know.
  • Light it up: – Try switching the incandescent light bulbs in your home instead into long lasting LED ones to save electricity.

It is not too late to start adding a couple ways to begin your January zero-waste challenge. At a later blog post, we can start focusing on our community.

  1. I love your tips for a zero waste January. I was not aware that there are bamboo toothbrushes. I try to be a green person as much as I can. I use cloth towels for cleaning. I also make veggie wash with vinegar and baking soda.

  2. Fab post! I’ve already started going through my clothes this month to see what I no longer wear and can be donated.

Will continue this weekend and hopefully have a good bundle.

  3. Great tips! I’ve recently started using bamboo toothbrushes and either paper or bamboo cotton buds, and always bring my tote bags for shopping!

  4. Great post! I have actually never heard of a Wardrobe Party but that sounds really fun to do with your group of friends! πŸ‘πŸΎπŸ‘πŸΎ

I can envision the planning now lol…

  5. I never knew there were bamboo toothbrushes. I’m going to have to keep my eyes open for those. I use all the socks that the mates disappear for cleaning cloths. I probably have 200 of them in bags in my laundry room that have no mates anymore or holes in. I’ve not bought paper towels for the last 3 years.
I’ve also used LED lights for years now as well. I do with they lasted a little longer than they do though. I can’t afford to keep buying them when I have to change them out every 3 to 6 months. They are supposed to last a lot longer but for some reason, they never do.

  6. Thanks for a wonderful and informative post! It’s so important that we all reduce the amount of waste we produce, so it’s always great to learn new tips and tricks!

  7. I love that you are doing a zero-waste challenge! I would love to live a zero-waste lifestyle, and I’m always looking for ways to reduce waste – these are some great ideas! I love the idea of a wardrobe party!
